After her funeral on September 19, Queen Elizabeth II will be reunited with her husband of more than 70 years and former family members when she is laid to rest.

At Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel, Queen Elizabeth will be laid to rest. The ashes of her sister, Princess Margaret, as well as her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, are already interred there.

There will be a period of national mourning and a state funeral for the late queen in the days preceding the burial. The queen’s coffin recently traveled from her beloved Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she passed away, making many stops before arriving at Buckingham Palace.

Family members carried the queen’s coffin in a sad procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, where she will lie in state for five days so that people can pay their respects to the monarch with the longest reign in British history.

In honor of the queen, September 19 has been named a national public holiday in the United Kingdom.

When King Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry, and other royals lead the queen’s coffin to Westminster Abbey on that day, the funeral will get underway at 5:45 a.m. EST.

The state funeral service will begin at 6:00 a.m. EST and run for just an hour. The funeral will be attended by more than 2,000 people.

The coffin will then be transferred to Windsor Castle, where St. George’s Chapel is located. A televised committal service will be attended by more than 800 people.

At 2:30 p.m. EST, Queen Elizabeth will be buried in a private ceremony.

This is the first time a state funeral has been held in the United Kingdom since 1965, when former prime minister Winston Churchill died.
