MESSAGE
About 20 years ago I suffered with a prolonged illness that severely limited my life. I spent most of my time in bed or in a chair. I felt horrible and fell into a deep depression.

One Saturday morning I was talking with my wife as she patiently listened to my fear and hopelessness. “I feel as if God has abandoned me,” I cried. “My head is telling me that isn’t true, but the feelings seem so convincing.”
“Why don’t you call your friend Michael?” she asked. “You encourage each other when you’re down; I bet he’d like to hear from you.”
Later that day I did call Michael. “Gary!” he said excitedly. “I was walking on the beach this morning, and the Lord put a new song in my heart. I think it’s for you.” Then he sang it to me: “I’m always in your presence, I’m always under your watchful eye. I’m always in your presence, even though these feelings would lie.”

“Michael,” I said, “you have no idea how much that means to me.” Then I told him about my conversation with my wife and about my illness. Michael said, “That’s how much God loves you, mate! While you were talking with your wife, the Lord was giving me a song just for you.”
That day became a powerful reminder: I have always been in the presence of the Lord!

When I feel abandoned by God, I can turn to faithful friends for reassurance.
Thank you, Lord, for watching over us and never letting us out of your sight. Help us to remember that you will bring us peace in our struggles. Amen.
