THE UPPER ROOM DEVOTIONAL

MESSAGE

How could someone in his thirties have this much back pain? I wondered. One day the pain just showed up. I didn’t know what had caused it, but it hurt all day and night — as I sat to do my work while standing to cook dinner when working outside in the yard, and while trying to sleep at night.

I went to the doctor, but even after months of x-rays, consultations, referrals, physical therapy, and medications, nothing had helped.

I resolved to try something new: I would walk 30 minutes a day for 30 days. After walking daily for a week, the pain had lessened. The following two weeks, the pain was even less. And after one month of daily walks, my back felt better than it had in a year. The regular, gentle exercise was helping to heal my back, loosen the muscles, and eliminate my pain.

Everyone has pain at some point. Often the pain we feel most is emotional, be it from unkind words, betrayal, or grief. When we are in emotional pain, spending time with God begins to heal us.

Even spending 30 minutes a day reading God’s word will help reduce our pain. Just as walking every day healed my back, reading God’s word every day heals our hearts.
