John 6:5-13

KEY VERSE: Andrew said, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” – John 6:9 (NIV)

The account of the boy who gave up his lunch to feed the multitudes is a familiar one. But I often wonder about the one who prepared the boy’s lunch.

When he saw the great crowd waiting for him, Jesus tested Philip by asking where they were to find food for the people to eat. Philip said it would take more than eight months’ wages to buy food for five thousand men, not to mention the women and children.

Andrew found a boy who had a lunch of five loaves of bread and two fish. But he asked, “How far will they go among so many?” Yet, in the hands of Jesus, those five small loaves and two small fish fed the multitudes, with twelve baskets left over.

I imagine the boy’s mother making his lunch at home, lovingly shaping and baking the small loaves, and placing the fish into a small sack. I imagine her faithfully preparing her son for the day, not knowing he would be a part of an encounter with the miracle-working Savior

When I wonder if what I do for Jesus has value, I think of the people who provided the raw materials for a miracle that day. My behind-the-scenes faithfulness can be part of creative miracles in the hands of Jesus.

Dear Lord, magnify our small, faithful efforts so that we may join you in blessing others today. Amen.

Even humble efforts can change lives.
