This year, the AMAs expanded or brought back six award categories: K-pop artist of the year, Afrobeats artist of the year, favorite rock song, favorite rock album, favorite touring artist of the year, and favorite soundtrack. This is a huge step forward for both K-pop and Afrobeats, which have not received their own AMAs categories until now.

Since the pandemic, when fewer people went to concerts, our favourite touring artist had to be cancelled the past two years. Even though moviegoing was down last year for the same reason, the release of a fan-favorite soundtrack was cancelled.
